Mara is an accomplished civil litigator and class action attorney with a wide range of experience litigating in state and federal courts, as well as in state and federal agencies. Her focus is complex litigation. Mara helped recover tens of millions of dollars for consumers and employees in class action cases. Mara was appointed class counsel in over fifty cases, and that number keeps growing. She has filed and resolved class action cases under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (“BIPA”), Telephone Consumer Protection Act (“TCPA”), and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”).Overall, Mara advocates for employees who have experienced workplace discrimination and consumers who have been mistreated. Mara is at the forefront of fighting for individuals discriminated against because of their arrest or conviction records under the Illinois Background Check Law. Mara believes in taking the best cases to trial. She served as a key attorney in a case brought by a senior citizen against a major loan servicer, Hammer v. RCS, that resulted in a $2,000,000 jury verdict upheld on post-trial motions.
As a leader in her field, Mara lectured at educational seminars for lawyers and other professionals. Mara is a member of the NELA (National Employment Lawyers Association), Illinois, where she serves on the Low Wage Workers Subcommittee. She is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, and she serves on the Privacy & Information Securities Law Section Council.
Mara graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law where she also served as an Articles Editor for the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal. She obtained her undergraduate degree as a double major in political science and psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is a member of the Illinois Bar and admitted to practice in the Northern and Southern federal district courts in Illinois. She is additionally admitted to the Eastern District of Wisconsin and Eastern District of Michigan.
